how to enable linking data in word and excel applications to a database repository of terms and definitions
I have been trying in google, on MSDN, on Experts-Exchange and other places to ask a question and get and answer and I have found a black whole in that my search words I use, statistically bring up completely non-relevant stuff.

Here is what the problem is I want to solve:

Dealing with a Business Intelligence data warehouse with marts and cubes that is being built for customers not yet ‘defined’ we are building to standards in healthcare. The challenge is the volume of requirement specification documents, iterations of review and document versions we are loosing track of data and terms being defined from the requirements:measuresBig Smileimensions on to data dictionary…

Over the months a term that has been defined, gets changed, but not in all documents and (or) then gets used in a slightly different phrase so that now we are having a heck of time synchronizing our data elements and terms across our documentation (in Word, Excel, Visio)

What I would like to do is be able to in any of our Microsoft documents, as we specify requirements, and either create a new or use an existing TERM I would like to right click on the word, and have it check if that word is in the data base, if it is not, then create a new data entry for the database. It would be able to give the option to put term in measure table, dimension table, data dictionary table, or glossary term table.

This way, as the DEFINITIONS of a term or word are modified, where that term is used in requirement docs, the change will push back out to all the docs. Example ER Visit (Emergency Room Visit) got changed to ED Visit (Emergency Department Visit)

We are using SharePoint and unfortunately a tool is only as good as it’s set up and then the content is only as good as the user group inputting/updating content… the problem I am facing as a systems analyst on this project is both a document management problem and a requirements management problem. I have not seen or heard of a tool that solves the problem.

Ergo, would like to build it.

But my code work has been too far in the past (vba/vb 6.0) era stuff, while I know what can be done, I am not phrasing my query correctly to find a forum to ask the question in a way I can get answers.

Any suggestions?

how can a web app support multiple open browser windows in IE

This question is not specific to .net, but I imagine that it's something that a .net developer might run into...

I'm developing a web app that uses the HttpSession to store session info. I want the user to be able to have multiple browser windows open. Each browser window shares the same HttpSession. However, the user experience should be that each browser window has its own independet application state, which does not get affected by the other windows. So I added a hidden form field to the HTML called "conversationId", the intention being that each browser window would have a different conversationId. When the user opens a new window, the app notices that there is no conversationId request parameter, and initializes conversationId to a new unique value. The conversationId is then used as a level of indirection to data inside the HttpSession. (In order to maintain the conversationId hidden variable, the web app only uses PUT requests.)

This all work perfectly in Firefox. But it doesn't work with IE6 or IE7.

Here's the difference... With Firefox, if the user opens a new browser window (using control-N or File/New), the window comes up blank. The user can then access the app via a bookmark. The app detects that there is no hidden conversationId variable, and creates a new uniqeu conversationId. Voila, everything works great.

But on IE, when the user opens a new window (using control-N or File/New), IE clones the existing window. Both the URL and the HTML (including the hidden conversationId form field) are cloned too. So the new window has a conversationId that is identical to the previous window.

We've already considered and rejected the idea of adding a "new window" button.

I imagine that other apps must have encountered this issue. Is there a solution?

We have a client that has purchased some syndicated content which they want to inclue within thier site. The content are coldfusion dynamic pages. I need a way to get these pages into the clients current layout. However there are a number of issues beyond my control which are making this task about 20x more difficult than it should be:

1.) The external content needs to be styled to match the client's site. Normally a provider would allow for this and have some kind of configuration or content management thing, but this one dosent, at least not to change the few things i need to change. The content has an inline style sheet that i need to change or nix all together so i can apply mine.

2.) The person who built the site initially unfortunately used a table based layout so in order to just use a frameset id have to recode nearly all the layouts, about 40 individual pages. However, even the framset wouldn negate issue 1.

3.) The clients server dosent run PHP or ColdFusion ASP.Net (the 3 languages which im novice to inermediate with) but does support ASP classic which ive never really looked at...

So initially my thought was to use some kind of include to drop the external page into our layout template, but im ver sure i cant include an external file with ASP classic, and now that i think of it im not sure if you can do this with CF or PHP as ive only ever used included files that were on the server of the calling page. Furthermore, and iFrame, while workable, isnt really desireable because id need to scroll the content and a second scroll bar is not acceptable.

After some research i thought maybe I had foufn an answer of sorts perhaps using XMLHttpRequest to get the document and store it as a string (or if it ended up being wel formed, as xml), then modify the code between <style></style> with my style rules . However the documentation at Devmo says that for security reasons you can call an external page.

what i need at this point is a nod in the right direction of how to accomplish this using ASP Classic and/or JS, or a simple indication that, "hey, its just not possible".

Any thoughts?

I am a seasoned .Net Architect with 10 years professional experience. I've come up with a good idea for a fun project. Without giving too much away, it's a project directly tied to MySpace.com.

THERE IS NO COMPENSATION FOR THIS POSITION

Q: Why would I want to work for free?
A: To build experience and learn more about the .Net Framework
A: To work with a seasoned web developer to hone your skills.
A: The fame and fortune of a high-exposure web site.

Q: What will I have to do?
A: Code. I have done the architecture, the data model, and the design, I just need someone to crank it out.

Q: Will I get credit for the site?
A: Yes, you will be prominently listed and displayed as the Lead Developer.

Q: What .Net Language(s) or technologies will be used?
A: I don't care what language you use. The technologies will focus on "web2.0" design and utilize AJAX.

Q: What if the site blows up, goes international, and we start making serious $$?
A: We will split everything 49(you)/51(me).

Q: Honestly, how many hours of actual work are we talking here?
A: The site is fairly simple with all the back end work done. That being said, front-end work to get us to a launching point is estimated at 30hrs.

Q: You're so good, why don't you build it yourself?
A: After you've been writing code for 1/3 of your life, you will suddenly realize that the act of banging out code becomes as attractive as banging your head against a wall.

Hi

I want to implement the following:

Any request from browser with a .conn extention should be stored. ( www.somewebsite.com/somedir/somefile.conn )
the somefile.conn should not be really present in the directory so IIS should not check if the file excists.Rather the filename requested should be stored with the request.
So what is being gathered is a collection of requests ( stil open and alive, I mean persistent http connection ) and the name of the file they used ( in this example somefile.conn ) [Usually when someone visits the site, the connection opens with the server over http, response gets sent to the browser and the connection closes... In case of persistent connection, the connection does not close but keeps alive... this prevent page refresh if later the server sends more response to the browser... (you can also see it as a chat application via the browser without page refresh) ]
Then the ASP.NET application should be able to send a response to every request that was stored requesting a particular filename ( in this example somefile.conn ). And some moments later the ASP.NET application can send a response to all requests that requested some other file like otherfile.conn
And at any other time the ASP.NET application can respond to the connections that requested any other files like in this example somefile.conn that are still very much alive and open just like all the other requests that are stored.
In other words:
We do not want ISAPI filter but want to use httphandler / httpmodule and perhaps this kind of thing can be done via tcplistener, httpwebrequest, httpwebresponse and/or sockets.
I want to create a system whereby if anybody visits my site the request connection should not be closed but remain active (keepalive) somewhere in a collection.

The reason I want to store the request somewhere is to be able to respond to the collected requests (any or all) at any given time.
The handler/module (initially I thought ISAPI) should be able to receive a string from the ASP.NET application and send that string as a response to the stored requests. However the requests should NOT close after being responded to and they SHOULD be kept alive. Because subsequent responses can be made at any given time.
Basically, I need a module to collect the requests (persistent connection) and keep them in a collection along with the filename requested... Another class/module should be able to respond to the group of x.conn or y.conn requests by the string I send to the class/module...

Thanks
Timsi

Ok, I have a funky situation here. The client has an existing windows application that they want exposed via their c# asp.Net application. The windows app is not .Net based and we do not have the source code for it.

Their thought is to have the app running on the web server and essientally screen-scrape it two-ways (data in and data out) on their web app. They want to recreate the basic field layout (even including tab-order) on the web page and then have the submitted data submitted to the windows app. All of this done on the fly of course.

Now, I've been in Web development for a number of years but have never heard of anything like this working. The reason behind this is the windows app is known and liked in the target community and would take too long to recreate each screen (300+ pages).

Any advice anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

For example, let's say I have a Web Custom Control that outputs a LinkButton. I want to be able to take a certain action (we'll say, output to the screen) when the LinkButton is clicked. Can anyone give me a fully coded example of this? Simply setting "lnk.Click += new EventHandler(lnk_Click);" isn't working. In fact the Text value of lnk isn't even highlighted as being a link.

Another Designer-Related Question

I've got a class (we'll call it Settings) that inherits from Component. This gives me a "Settings" object I can drop onto a page, which will place it in the bottom tray area where things like DataAdapters normally go.

Settings contains properties that are used by various Controls on the page. Those controls each have a property named SettingsControl of type Settings. This gives me a "SettingsControl" property in the designer for those Controls, which has a drop-down of all Settings objects currently on the page. When I select an item from the drop-down, the SettingsControl property becomes expandable with the properties of that instance of Settings. It also changes the html of the page so the Control has a "SettingsControl='mySettingsControl'" property. Awesome.

Here's the catch... if I close the page that contains these Controls, then re-open it in the designer, the Controls no longer indicate that they have been assigned a value. They all say "(None)" as if they were set to null. Interestingly, if I switch to HTML view, the "SettingsControl='mySettingsControl'" properties are all still set on each Control. It seems like something is wrong with my "get" method, but I can't imagine what. Here's the property on each of the Controls:

[Bindable(false),
Category("Misc"),
Description(""),
ParenthesizePropertyName(true)]
public Settings SettingsControl
{
get {return sharedSettings;}
set {sharedSettings = value;}
}
private Settings sharedSettings = null;

I've tried setting Bindable to true and I've tried the method that worked for my previous issue with expandable properties. So far nothing has been successful and I haven't been able to find anything useful online anywhere.

Any help would be very greatly appreciated. Naturally, if I find the solution on my own or give up, I'll make a post stating as such, so if this is still sitting here with no answer, I'm still trying to figure it out. :)

Alright, I'm REALLY close to having this working the way I want, but something is missing. I've got a web custom control that has several different pieces, which may each have their own font info... in the designer, I want each section for the different font settings to be expandable, so I created a "TextFormatting" class:

[TypeConverter(typeof(ExpandableObjectConverter)),
ParseChildren()]
public class TextFormatting
...

The properties that use the class are defined as:

[Bindable(true),
Category("Appearance"),
Description("...")]
public TextFormatting PropertyName
...

This class contains Font, ForeColor, and CssClass. The Font property is designed as:

[Description("The font used for text within the control.")]
[NotifyParentProperty(true)]
public FontInfo Font
...

ForeColor and CssClass are defined similarly.

Now... this ALMOST works. When I put the control on an aspx page and go to the designer properties, I get nice expandable sections for "AlbumStatistics" and "AlbumTitles" which are both TextFormatting properties. These break out with Font, ForeColor, and CssClass settings. Yay! If I set ForeColor or CssClass, the go to html view, I get attributes like AlbumTitles-CssClass="NormalStyle" which is just dandy. While in HTML view, I can manually add the attribute AlbumTitles-Font-Italic="True" and when I go back to the designer, the "AlbumTitles" section is italicized and the setting in the properties window for AlbumTitles/Font/Italic is indeed set to True!

Just one more thing to test, right? What if I change a Font sub-setting like Bold from within the designer? It SHOULD place a setting in the HTML view along the lines of AlbumTitles-Font-Bold="True" but you know what? it doesn't... it doesn't do anything. I can NOT get that property to change from the designer. Sure, it changes the control visually, but it doesn't actually change the HTML... ANY ideas as to what I'm missing here?

I have installed it, and played around with it for about 90 minutes. I would love to get my hands really dirty with it some more, but I am in the middle of about 5 other projects, and the Beta is more like a hobby at this moment.

Has anyone else played around with it (or even Beta 1)?
So far I like what I see, but I have barely scratched the surface. To see my blog on what I have done so far, you can go to: http://spaces.msn.com/members/dotnetwebman
Say guys, I've been programming for about 15 years in my own free time, have had very little formal education with software, but have managed to find and fill a niche for my services. I'm coming from the background of C/C++ with DJGPP and Rhide, Borland C++ in DOS, MSVC 6, Eclipse, Java, and most recently tons of T-SQL, and VBA, Microsoft Access and a little ASP using JavaScript (what can I say, I love structured exception handling, something VB in old ASP doesn't have).

I'm looking to learn .NET "technoligies" and am tasked with creating a client for a complex SQL Server 200 database that has about 33 tables, and tons and tons of views, stored procedures, functions, triggers, etc... It will storing up to 1gb of data. I'm planning to make a System.Windows.Forms client. There will only a handful of users for each instance of the application at best. They will always always be connected on a 100mb LAN. Most of the users will require very little bandwith except for a select fiew who will require the ability to run large reports. The design of the database can be changed, as I will be responsible for all aspects of the design and implementation of this project in the long term. Being that I am the only programmer on this project and it is complex, I'll need to maximize time in the development process. This could easily become my entire life, and I'd rather that not happen.

The way I look at it, I've got a few choices for the basic design and implementation. I could:

Use ADO.Net Connections to sql server, storing a connection instance and related data adapters / sets within in each form they are used. Good side: it's a drop in replacement requiring no changes to the already exising SQL Database. Bad side: there would be thousands of lines of T-SQL stored procedures and triggers to manage. It's harder for me to code complex processing with reliable error handling in T-SQL than it is is to do the same thing in C#. (Because of structured excpetion handling, inheritence, etc, etc)

--OR--

Use .NET Remoting within a custom windows service or IIS to provide an interface to inteface to query a database and return raw DataSets that will be merged with the form's bound dataset. Good side: if I use IIS, I don't have to write authentication or permissions into the service. Also, since I'm working on this long term, I can slowly migrate its stored procedures and triggers into the service, eventually eliminating all of T-SQL's awkard error handling...

Would any of you chose either of these design strategies or something else entirely? It is still months away for it to even be expected that I'm working on it, but I'm trying to get an early start and am in the planning stages.

Hello all,

I am stuck. I have been asked to write a Shopping Cart class that uses an object from an Events class to hold a user's shopping cart in memory. The SQL guy doesn't want to have a Shopping Cart table in SQL Server. Basically, I am pulling two session variables (clientID & regID) and a querystring variable (eid -- "eventID") to make the cart client/user/event specific. I am having problems doing two things (to begin with). First, populating the in memory DataTable correctly with the GetEventsByID (short clientID, short eventID) object is not working. Second, I can't get it to display in a datagrid. It compiles in VS.NET 2003 fine, but going to the page gives me a Stack Overflow error. I haven't even got to the part where the quantity or in memory DataTable can be manipulated. If anyone wants the .aspx page that has the DataGrid listing, I can provide that as well.

Here's what I have(code-behind):

protected System.Web.UI.WebControls.DataGrid dgCart;

DataTable Cart;

DataView CartView;

short shtSsnClientID;

short shtQryEventID;

private void Page_Load(Object sender, EventArgs e)

{

shtSsnClientID    = Convert.ToInt16(Session["clientID"]);

shtQryEventID     = Convert.ToInt16(Request.QueryString["eid"]);

if (Session["rLMS_Cart"] == null)

{

Cart = new DataTable();

Cart.Columns.Add(new DataColumn("Qty", typeof(string)));

My first thought was, "Well, there's diff and there's windiff; I'll bet there's a webdiff." A quick google search confirms my suspicions, but all I can find are *nix versions, and all I have to run this on is Windows machines.

Does anyone know of a (preferably free) tool that can solve this for me? Just something that will take two URLs and perform a diff on all pages linked within the same domain. I'm trying to avoid the need to write our own.

Another feature I'd like it to have is to compare the images on the pages for changes. It doesn't have to be a pixel-by-pixel comparison there. Simply file date or size will do.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The Happy Valley Theatre Company is a small business that wants a new system for selling tickets and managing their multiple venues. Their existing system is slow and inefficient. However, they do have a modern computer and a printer that prints tickets.

Here are some notes about the theatre made by the business analyst. Unfortunately, the analyst has been doing the job for 40 years, without changing her techniques. This shows in many of the details of the specs, which are occasionally laughable.

There are two theatres - a main theatre with 80 seats, and a studio theatre with 40 seats. Seat plans are attached (see appendix A). Also, there are 2 rehearsal rooms which people can hire.

The theatre takes telephone and counter bookings. A typical booking averages three tickets. People book specific seats in the main theatre, but not in the studio which is on a first-come basis.

Tickets are sold at different prices to members, children, concessions and the full-price public. Studio performances are cheaper than the main theatre.

Ticket sales and studio hire fees need to be transferred to the accounts system. This will just be in the form of total daily takings per venue.

The theatre does not have a mailing list, other than members. The theatre manager wants to build such a mailing list to advertise special events.

They have a web site for advertising and enquiries only, but are not interested in selling tickets over the web at present. Your design, however, must not preclude such an extension to the system in the future.

While in the analyst’s descriptions, there are roles for Booking Clerk, Theatre Manager and Accountant, the distinct roles are largely a figment of the analyst’s imagination. As with almost any small business of such a scale, in actually everybody does everything, and frequently under great pressure.

Further, there are obviously a number of activities that are left out of the analysis. Some of these are completely obvious from the descriptions here and below. It seems that the analyst must have been lunching with the owner, who has only a remote connection with the realities of the business.

=====================
Task is to design a .NET system for this.
Entire project specification is available upon request.

Thanks!

The rest of the site is in aspx and it works together. The only problem is that when another person attempts to log on the session or the application enters another subfolder in the root, the session is ended and the user is asked to log in again. There is not global.asa file and the global.asax file doesn't capture the login done in asp in the subfolder level. Having jumped ship from novice asp r to novice asp.net early on in my learning I'm not sure what is going on or even how to debug. The client doen't want to have the asp pages rewritten because my contractor has pushed that into a later phase, but both of them want it to work last week..argh! Any ideas out there? I've read so many things that I'm not sure what is right...some sites say yes asp.net and asp can share session information, or at least aspx has backwards compatibility, other sources say absolutely not with out moving info to the database (requiring rewrite of the asp pages) or creating some transaction routine (time out of my pocket). I also think it may have something to do with the boundries (ie application and its subfolders in IIS) of the main app. Please I need a glimmer of hope on the subject before I decide to go back and wait tables to get through school. thanks ahead of time.

I imagine there would be a function in page1.aspx.cs that looks like this:

private void createButton_Click(object sender, System.EventArgs e)
{
<do some conditional checks>
if (condition passes)
{
<send browser to page2.aspx>
}
}

But I don't know how to make the browser get sent over to page2.aspx. Hints?

thanks,

-m

I'm having two issues with .NET 2003 IDE related to opyLocal. Wondered if anyone else had encountered these issues:

1. When you add a new reference, it appears with CopyLocal defaulted to True. However, it doesn't add a "Private" attribute to the Reference in the .csproj project file (don't know if this happens with non=C# projects).

Later, when you look at the setting in the Solution->Reference->Properties window in the IDE, its setting is indeterminate. If the DLL still exists at the specified location, it shows CopyLocal=True. If the DLL is not there, it shows CopyLocal=False.

2. I've found at least one case where setting CopyLocal=False deletes DLLs other than the one whose reference is being changed. It's in the case where the IDE has determined that a reference is needed and adds it. The instant the combo box for CopyLocal is set to False, a handful of other DLLs disappear from the shared bin directory. I'm assumeing they're downstream dependencies but haven't isolated other details yet.

Anyone else encounter these issues?
